Remember MechWarrior, the first-person based, light’em and shoot’em up Mech game? Well, it’s been quite a while since anybody heard the title MechWarrior, and there’s a good reason for that. The last game in the MechWarrior series was launched 16 years ago, on the 24th of November.
After launching part four called Vengeance and the standalone Mercenaries, FASA Interactive, the game’s developers gave up on the project in order to pursue other projects.
Recently, it seems that the series caught someone’s attention. And not just anyone, but Piranha Games, the company which developed great titles such as Duke Nukem Forever, Need for Speed Undercover, Bass Pro Shops – The Strike, and Die Hard – Nakatomi Plaza.
Piranha Games declared that new MechWarrior game is in the making, and to prove just that, they’ve recently released the pre-alpha trailer of the fifth installment in the MechWarrior series called, MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries.
There are many unknowns regarding MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries. First of all, the company has no released any spec for the PC version of the game. However, the pre-alpha trailer recently uploaded by Piranha Games suggests that the game might have been built using the Unreal 4 Engine, which means that you should expect some high specs.
Now, even though developers have kept a closed lid on the game’s specs, they’ve revealed a couple of details about the game’s plot. It would seem that the game’s action takes place in a distant future. Humanity left Earth a long time ago and set course to colonize a remote region of space called the Inner Sphere.
According to the story, this region of space used to be inhabited by a race called the Star League. However, various confrontations broke the Star League into 5 Successor States. The player takes the role of a rookie Mech soldier. Your job – bash, blow up, vaporize, and crush everything in your path. It’s as simple and elegant as that.
The developers said that the game would feature a story-driver campaign and probably a multiplayer mode. In addition, the devs declared that the game is mostly choice-based, which means that the choices you’ll make throughout the campaign will influence the outcome of the game.
From the pre-alpha video released by Piranha Games, we can see that a lot of PvE combat, and something of a twisted sense of humor (the mech’s primary cannon is called Sudden Death).
Piranha Games announced that MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries is scheduled to debut in 2018.
