(Mirror Daily, United States)- One of the biggest companies in the world has accomplished a great achievement by creating a speech recognition system which is as good of a listener as people are. This speech recognition system is equal to a professional transcriber. It has a 5.9% rate of error which is a low one for this type of system.
In general, these recognition systems are not that good and don’t “hear” several words in a row and that makes it hard for somebody to make a command if he or she is not understood.
“We’ve reached human parity,” said chief speech scientist Xuedong Huang in a statement, calling the milestone “a historic achievement”.
In order to make this possible, the team which designed the system used a Computational Network Toolkit. This uses a network technology that puts similar words in the same groups. This is how the speech recognizer will generalize words.
Microsoft used the technology from Cortana, Window’s personal assistant in order to produce this speech recognition system.
This system that Microsoft devised is revolutionary, but the company still has a lot of work to do from now on to make it even better. They need to make the system recognize the meaning and the tone of the person, to see if the context is right.
The announcement of this system was made on Tuesday. All of the people who worked for the speech recognition system are proud of their work and say that they got to the point where technology is equal to humans.
The team did mention that the system, as well as a person, is not perfect and it has errors but the error rate is as low as the one of a professional transcriptionist. The words that can be misheard are “is, “have”, “the”, “a”. These are the same words that the system mishears.
This is going to be a great development for Microsoft, for Windows, and especially for Cortana, Window’s digital assistant. If Microsoft decides to input this system in Cortana it will make it the greatest Artificial Intelligence assistant made until now. The assistant is going to be intelligent, listen to everything the user say, and it will also recognize more than 90% of orders compared to other artificial intelligence assistance devices.
