Books Are Better Than Tablets

March 12, 2016 By Ryan Harris Leave a Comment

"Reading from an electronic device in bed"

Reading from a tablet affects the brain, tricking it into believing that it is daytime.

(Mirror Daily, Unites States) – Books are better than tablets when it comes to reading before going to sleep. Researchers found that people who read from a book experience more sleepiness than individuals who use a tablet for the same activity.

This is not the first time somebody claims that books are better than tablets. But it is one of the first experiments that scientifically proves the affirmation.

Janne Gronli, the lead author, and researcher at the Bergen University in Norway declared that the study found that when it comes to a good night’s sleep, books are better than tablets.

In order to reach these conclusions, she gathered a sample of sixteen volunteers. All of them were nonsmokers, familiar with both physical books and tablets, and had no psychiatric, medical or sleep disorders. The ages of the participants varied from 22 to 33.

The volunteers were asked to adopt a regular sleeping pattern before the experiment so that the results would be relevant. After that, the researchers measured the participants in three separate nights.

In the first one, they measured their sleep activity so that they could have a point of reference. In the second, the volunteers were asked to read for half an hour from an iPad, and in the third they repeated the activity, only this time using a book.

According to the result, the night in which the participants read from an actual book, they felt sleepier, and their brain was ready to engage in the restful activity. But when they delighted themselves with the electronic version, their brains were more alert, and it took them longer to reach the REM stage after the sleep onset.

Books are better than tablets because tablets use blue light which tricks the brain into thinking that it is daylight outside, and it should become alert and ready for action. But the study was realized on a small sample, and further research is needed in order for the scientists to declare that books are better than tablets when it comes to before-sleep activities.

Furthermore, there are a couple of illuminating devices that use blue light as well. So, in a future study, researchers have more variables to take into consideration.

Other members of the scientific community are defending Apple products saying that the company already released new night time features that diminish the amount of blue light used by the device, thus allowing the user to go to sleep faster.

Google Photos Makes Photo Editing Easier

March 4, 2016 By Matthew Slotkin Leave a Comment

"Man taking a picture on his smartphone"

The new version of the Google Photos app will make photo editing easier.

(Mirror Daily, United States) – The age of Picasa is over. Google photos makes photo editing easier and more fun. The latest update to the editor brings plenty of new, exciting, user-friendly features that will make your social media profiles look more artistic and your phone’s storage emptier.

Google photos makes photo editing easier and more fun. And the new version brings much-awaited modifications to cloud back-up and image browsing. Not to mention the new and improved editing tools that require far less time spent on each photograph.

With the new version of Google Photos, users can process an entire album faster and easier. The app has eliminated the need for saving each photo after editing it and then uploading a new one. Now, you can touch up one photograph and move right next to the other. Any changes will be saved automatically, and there is an existing option of removing all editing and reverting to the original file.

Also, for there is another solution to get rid of those pesky photo bombers. Google Photos allows you to perform a particular crop. The classic templates original, 4:3, 16:9 and square are still available. All you have to do is drag the photo to the wanted size ratio.

But there are much more enhancements that Google made to its app. For example, the search feature is now working astonishingly well. You can search for the word “dog”, and the improved algorithm will give you any image stored on your device that contains a dog.

This feature will come in handy to those people that store massive amounts of photographs on their mobile devices and who spend an eternity manually searching a single file.

And speaking of storage space, the app offers unlimited storage in Google cloud. This means that all of that memory you are currently occupying with tons of photographs will be cleared for other purposes. Also, you will be able to access your files from other devices using your cloud login information.

Other modifications to the photo editing tool include the transformation of “Collections”. The feature is now called “Albums,” which is a more classical approach. Every platform or application that involves photos must have an “Albums” category.

Right above the new, improved classification instrument, you will find a horizontal scrolling row that will offer you easier access to places, people, albums, movies, and videos.

The app is free-to-download and can already be accessed by Android users. Apple users have to wait a little while longer before it becomes available for iPhones.

1234 Is Still the Most Popular Password

January 24, 2016 By Matthew Slotkin Leave a Comment

"The password password being decrypted"

Right after “1234”, the password “password” is one of the most used in 2015.

(Mirror Daily, United States) – These days everything requires a password, from the thermostat, to our phone, e-mail, Facebook and even books (the electronic ones, of course), but it’s hard to remember so many passwords for so many devices and accounts, so people usually use one or two trustworthy combinations. According to the most recent survey, 1234 is still the most popular password used in 2015.

Recently SplashData released a list that comprised the 25 worst passwords that were used in 2015. They were called the worst passwords because Tony Stark’s shoe polisher could have guessed them. The worst part is that more than half of the secret codes were on the list in 2014 and 2013, and “1234” is on the list since the first e-mail account was ever created.

Apart from the classic “1234”, “12345”, “123456”, “123456789” and “1234567890” there are some new additions to the list of passwords that lack the imagination factor. For example, number two on the “Top worst of 2015” is “password”. While it is a funny pun and a very easily remembered one, it is used by millions of users worldwide. This means that the account protected by “password” could be hacked in a couple of seconds”.

But 2015 is not only the year in which 1234 is still the most popular password, it is also the year in which, after decades of absence and 3 widely discussed prequels, Star Wars came back to the big screens and generated so much excitement among the fans that thousands of them entrusted the privacy of their accounts to “solo” and “starwars”.

For those users that lack the imagination needed to create a password of their own, there are certain apps that generate the virtual keys for the user. The bad side? They can be hacked easily.

Big on-line companies such as Google and Yahoo are trying to add a bit of extra protection to the accounts of their users and they report any strange activity recorded on them. For example an attempt at connecting to an account from an IP that does not consist with the town or country in which the user resides. This is the first measure of protection that they too.

For the moment, the two companies are experimenting with new ways of account protection that will no longer require a password, but something harder to mimic or hack.

Apple already took a step forward in this direction and implemented a fingerprint scanner on their phones, so that only the rightful user may access it.

There will be a time when we will access all our accounts via fingerprints or facial recognition technology, but for now, 1234 is still the most popular password.

Apple Outruns Samsung on the Phone Market, but Alternatives Like Lenovo, Huawei and Xiaomi Are Rising Fast

March 4, 2015 By Melissa Gansler Leave a Comment

Apple_v_Samsung

Having sold 74.8 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of 2014, when Samsung only sold 73 million smartphones, Apple has finally become the leader of the phone market. This is the first time since 2011 when iPhones are sold better than Samsung smartphones globally.

The company founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak has reached its highest profit so far (higher than any private company’s profit ever reported): $ 18 billion in the last quarter of 2014, while Samsung declared that their profits have decreased by 37% compared to the previous year.

After Apple (with 20.4% of the smartphone market share) and Samsung (19.9%) comes Lenovo (who bought Motorola’s mobile division in the fall of 2014). Although its market share is still far behind the two giants (6.6%), this still represents a 47.6% growth over last year’s share. The ascending trend of this company is mirrored by other rising stars like Xiaomi (who offers good quality Android at more affordable prices and who tripled its sales in the last year). Having shipped 18.6 million smartphones in the last quarter of the past year, just a little behind Huawei’s 21 million and Lenovo’s 24 million, Xiaomi has a success that indicates that there is still an interest for alternatives, although Apple is so far ahead.

The ascent of these Chinese companies on the lower cost market, along with Apple’s domination on the premium phone market, exposes Samsung to a double pressure. The way to survive this crisis, according to Gartner research director Roberta Cozza, is for Samsung to aim for a longer-term differentiation by structuring its apps and services in a very coherent, organic manner.

Despite Apple’s clear advance in the last quarter of 2014, Samsung remains the biggest vendor of the year in the phone industry, with 307.5 million devices shipped (compared to Apple’s 191.4 million). The whole smartphone market has surpassed the 1 billion threshold in 2014 (1.2 billion devices sold, compared to 969.7 million in 2013).

Google Play’s App Store Grew Faster than Apple’s in 2014

January 19, 2015 By Matthew Slotkin Leave a Comment

Android platform has already overtaken iOS in the smartphone market segment. The 2014 data reveals that Google has surpassed Apple for the total number of apps- 1.43 million compared to 1.21 million. For the first time since the launch of the App Store, Google has overtaken Apple with the highest number of apps.

Google Play’s App Store Grew Faster than Apple’s in 2014

The growth is not limited to Apple or Google app store. There has been a 90% growth in Amazon’s app store-up to 293,000 apps. It will be extremely beneficial for those who are using BlackBerry 10 smartphones or Kindle Fire devices preloaded with Amazon App Store.

Business and food & drink saw the biggest growth in iOS while Android saw the highest growth in games and photography. With the Android cameras getting better, it is not surprising to such growth in photography. Much of this growth took place in the latter half of the year. More developers joined Google in 2014 as compared to the combined total of Apple and Amazon. App development is also on the rise and saw a growth of 50% in 2014.
