The Call of Duty franchise has been on the market for almost fifteen years now.
(Mirror Daily, United States) – Activision has officially confirmed that Infinity Ward will develop the 2016 Call of Duty. The news of this comes only a few days after Activision announced that the company will launch a new Destiny game next year.
This is the first Call of Duty game developed by Infinity Ward after Activision implemented the three-year rotation between Sledgehammer, Treyarch and Infinity Ward. The last game in the CoD franchise that was developed by Infinity Ward was Ghosts and it was released in 2013. That was also the first CoD to be available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Sledgehammer released Advanced Warfare in 2014 and Treyarch released Black Ops III in 2015. There are no significant differences between the three, apart from the fact that in Advanced Warfare Sledgehammer decided to introduce zombies into the picture.
In the last years, the franchise started to drift away from its original focus on historical battles. Among the real-life wars that could have been a source of inspiration for the military FPS was the Vietnam War. But unfortunately, the Call of Duty Vietnam was cancelled alongside other failed attempts like Combined Forces, Devil’s Brigade, Tactics and the Real-Time Card Game.
The plot of the 2016 Call of Duty was not made public by Infinity Ward, but fans are expecting the dystopian future setting that has claimed the franchise ever since the Black Ops II game was released. Mark Rubin did hint about CoD moving into outer space, but it was not an official statement.
But there might be a problem with the latest Call of Duty installment. Treyarch has announced a few DLCs for the extraordinarily well-received Black Ops III. And it’s cheaper to buy DLCs for a game that you already know than to buy a new one.
The Call of Duty franchise has been keeping players glued to their seats for fifteen years now. And the game’s mechanics are much more a part of the CoD tradition than the historical settings. This is why it is obvious that Infinity Ward will develop the 2016 Call of Duty with enhanced game mechanics.
Activision has earned over $780 million out of Downloadable Content alone in 2015. The total amount of earnings reached $2.12 billion in only the fourth quarter of 2015.
In total, the company which is based in sunny California earned $4.62 billion in 2015, a little less than $4.81 billion in 2014. But 2014 was the year of Destiny and Advanced Warfare, so we understand the difference. And if Infinity Wards will develop the 2016 Call of Duty, and Treyarch will release new DLCs for Black Ops III, 2016 will be a great year for Activision.
