Relay for Life Endless Efforts

July 10, 2016 By Tara Hamilton

Relay for Life keeps up the good work.

(Mirror Daily, United States) – The initiative of the Relay for Life event continues, this time in Battle Creek, at Lakeview High School. It will be an event where participants will walk for 14 hours. Over 150 people will attend this year’s Relay and everyone has a reason.

Some come to celebrate the survivors, while others come to get inspired and encouraged in their fight against cancer. Other participants take part in the event to raise funds and to honor the ones who passed away.

The Relay for Life is a great initiative organized by volunteers from many cities to raise awareness and funds to support the research of the American Cancer Society. Many people gather to bring their contribution, whereas some find their inspiration and the power to keep fighting.

Jessica Metheny, a cancer survivor, is one these participants who never gave up even if she had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma during her six-month pregnancy. Don Kinsley, another survivor, confessed that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s Mantle Cell Lymphoma in 2009.

Both of them are cancer survivors who decided to bring their contribution every year in the Battle Creek Relay for Life. This initiative began in 1985, and it has now spread throughout the whole world.

Metheny also stressed that after her grandmother had died of breast cancer, she did her best to raise awareness for cancer, but Metheny never thought that she would also get diagnosed at 27 years old.

Fortunately, her son was born healthy and safe, and then she started the chemotherapy treatment to deal with all cancer cells. She confessed that a cure existed for her type of cancer, but not everyone gets that opportunity.

That is why she decided to be a part of this event and to bring her contribution by raising awareness and funds so that all cancer fighters would see that they are not alone. You should never feel alone, especially in the battle with this devastating disease.

This is probably the most important goal of the Relay for Life because it gathers people from everywhere and it encourages them to share their stories, support and inspire each other.

Kinsley stated that he is in remission but that he had to fight a fierce battle with cancer. Still, he stressed that the most vital thing is that you must never give up. There is a huge difference between being afraid and being afraid to fight.

Everyone is afraid of something, and it is natural, but we should never be afraid to fight. The teams participating in this year’s Relay have already raised over $22,000, but their goal is $64,000.

Relay for Life will take place in Mitchell County.

(Mirror Daily, United States) – The mission of Relay for Life event continues throughout the United States, and the next stop is Mitchell County. The event will take place at Stacyville City Park, Saturday, July 16th, from 4 to 9 p.m. to raise awareness and funds to support the research of the American Cancer Society.

There will be a special speech this year in the Osage Fourth of July Parade made by Verena Kramer (80 years old) and Carol Brumm (72 years old), two honorary cancer survivors.

Brumm has been a part of the organization team for the last six years events, supporting her daughter-in-law collect funds for a team. She was diagnosed with lymphoma in November 2014 but entered remission a few months ago.

Brumm stressed that the most important thing is that people must have faith, and also they need to think positive regardless of the situation. Kramer has been a part of the Relay initiative for the past 15 years after her granddaughter had been diagnosed with Children’s Leukemia.

Since then, Kramer has formed a team and raised funds to help people fight cancer. Also, Kramer has been battling with lymphoma for the past eight years. A tumor was removed from the tongue a few months ago, and her health condition is excellent.

This year’s event will include many recreational and entertaining activities, such as the Survivor’s walk around the park which will be illuminated by luminaria candles, the Dairy Wagon, food, music, and a silent auction.

Also, there will be a lot of games, in particular for kids, including the limbo, sack races, egg hunt, and balloon toss. The event will honor and recognize caregivers, survivors, and cancer patients who have been fighting with cancer for some time.

The Relay will be held in honor to those who passed away, support cancer fighters, and celebrate survivors. Luminaria candles will be part of the ceremony for those who lost the battle with cancer. All donations will go to the American Cancer Society to support the work of scientists who are trying to find a better treatment for this disease every day.

Plus, the funds will be used to provide information, critical medical assistance in case of an emergency, raise awareness, and to support cancer education.

People who want participate in the event are invited to visit relayforlife.org for additional information regarding the Relay event and to contact Aggie Theobald at 641-710-2431 for any questions.

Relay For Life Widely Spread

June 30, 2016 By John Birks

Relay for Life keeps up the good work.

(Mirror Daily, United States) – The initiative of many American citizens continues with a new Relay for Life event, this time at the Los Lunas High School Eddie Fulkerson Baseball Field. Cancer is a disease that affects many people throughout the United States every year.

According to Betty Richardson, cancer survivor and Peralta resident, one of the most important parts of this event is that people gather together. No one should feel alone in the battle with cancer. That is why Relay for Life aims to invite these people to share their stories, inspire, and encourage one another to stay strong.

There were many recreational activities including food, beverages, music, and games. Everyone celebrated cancer survivors, encouraged the people who are still fighting the disease, and the ones who passed away.

One of these survivors, Sharon Herndon, confessed that she wouldn’t have been cancer free for the last 15 years if she hadn’t discovered early that she is sick after a mammogram. Many other families participate in the event forming teams that raise funds for the cancer fighters.

Burzyeki family has participated in the Relay for Life over the last few years. Joan Burzyeki and two of her children suffer from a hereditary genetic disorder which is the source of adrenal and thyroid cancer.

These cancers cannot be cured by radiation or chemotherapy. Fortunately, Bret Coiner (her son) and Lachelle Coiner (her daughter) are doing better now.

For them, this event is a reason to celebrate and to commemorate the children’s grandfathers, Vincent Smith, and Bill Fritsche, who both died from cancer. Bret’s fiancé, Tracee Nesslage, also participated in the Relay to inform people about various types of cancer.

Tracee confessed that after she had met Bret and his family, she became more emphatic and she decided that she wants to do more for the people fighting with this disease. During the event, there will be the Survivors Lap around Eddie Fulkerson Baseball Field.

This event has raised until now $2,935 but during this year, people donated an impressive sum of $21,475. The money will go to the American Cancer Society to help scientists find a new treatment to deal with various types of cancer.

The Relay for Life will continue throughout the United States to raise awareness and funds regarding this disease.
