Pester Power: an effective weapon against mankind’s destructive habits.
A recent study shows that environmental activists rely on pester power to convince people to save the planet and the strategy could have numerous benefic consequences in the future. Children are said to be the only ones that truly have the power to inspire adults and to make effective changes in the world, campaigners have concluded.
Pester power is a formal term that was coined to express the emotional sabotage techniques that children normally use to convince their parents to buy this or that toy. To put it in more scientific words, pester power is the ability that children have to convince parents to purchase certain items by asking them repeatedly to do so.
The method has been successfully used so far by marketing campaigners, who often address their products to children hoping that the latter will in turn make use of their persuasive abilities and charm to convince adults to purchase them. While the scheme has often been criticized by psychologists and deontologists, who have claimed that using minors to increase sales percentages is wrong, pester power is now encouraged among environmental activists.
Climate change experts are well-aware that changes have to be enacted among the younger generations in order to be effective and prolonged. Many efforts have been made in this sense in the past years and experts are now satisfied with the results they have seen. Instead of convincing adults to correct their children’s environmental behavior, scientists are now going against the tide by giving children the authority to rectify their parents’ habits.
For that matter, many schools and high schools have developed educational programs aimed to instruct pupils on the importance of environmental-friendly measures. Children were, thus, thought to save water and other resources whenever this is possible. The educative program has managed to make the children more conscious about pollution and to determine them to keep the planet clean.
The new habits that children have acquired with the help of the educative programs will be later on passed on to parents. In activists’ opinion, kids will correct adults by apostrophizing them every time they use too much water for house activities or whenever they do not properly recycle the garbage.
Pester power is expected to have very good results in the near future as experts believe parents will be impressed both by their children’s interest in environmental activities and by their requests. There is nothing that determines parents to change their destructive habits like children’s emotional power. Many parents have become climate conscious once they have realized that they are leaving a dirty and sickened Earth to their children and that the latter will be directly affected by their negligence.
